Each player has 16 men arranged as follows : first make sure that there is a dark square at each players left hand corner. Nearest row (rank): Castle, Knight, Bishop, King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Castle. The queen will always be placed on her colour (Black Queen-black square) : (white Queen – white square).
Next row : 8 pawns. The object of the game is to capture the opponent’s king. A move that threatens the king is called ‘CHECK’, and if the king being attacked cannot defend itself or neutralize the attack, he will be in ‘CHECK-MATE). When a player move one of his/her men so that the square upon which the enemy king is standing is controlled by that man, the attacking player must announce, ‘CHECK’, if the king cannot move but cant’be captured, a ‘STALEMATE’ is called. Nobody wins.
The knight can move in any direction and can jump over other pieces. It moves two squares forward and one to the side.
The Castle (Rock) moves any number of squares in a straight line in any one direction. It can not move diagonally or jump over any other piece.
The Pawn moves one square at a time in forward direction and captures only on the forward diagonal squares.
The king can move in any direction but one square at a time.
The Queen moves over any number of vacant squares in any direction in a straight line like a castle or diagonally link a bishop.
The Bishop moves and captures diagonally. It can move any number of vacant squares in one direction at a time.
